Why do job descriptions suck so HARD???
It's like the recruiters of the world took all the marketing best practices of the last century (start with a clear hook, make it personalized to what the audience cares about, end with a powerful CTA) and said:
"Hey guys - let's do the exact opposite!"
Take the opening of every JD as an example. Here are 3 real ones:
1) "TikTok is the leading destination for short-form mobile video. Our mission is to inspire creativity and bring joy."
2) "Changing the world through digital experiences is what Adobe's all about. We give everyone—from emerging artists to global brands—everything they need to design and deliver exceptional digital experiences! We’re passionate about empowering people to create beautiful and powerful images, videos, and apps, and transform how companies interact with customers across every screen."
3) "A career in IBM Software means you'll be part of a team that transforms our customers' challenges into industry-leading solutions."
Starting with these generic mission statements ("inspire creativity," "digital experiences," "industry-leading solutions" - 🤮) really sends the following message:
"We're a big, stuffy company that hires like an assembly line. So better get used to being a cog... " :)
Vs.
"Here's the really juicy stuff we need to get done. Are you game to take on this big challenge???"
Any ideas on why we consistently botch the very first impression we make as employers?
Or have any examples of better JDs?
