Could having a *BAD* LinkedIn Profile actually be worse than having *NO* LinkedIn Profile at all?
Eagle-eyed Adam Shpall, pointed out just such a quirk in this study from ResumeGo about the power of LinkedIn profiles to drive interviews.
While the main finding is that having a great LinkedIn profile can make a significant difference in your chance of getting an interview, Adam pointed out that having a bare-bones profile actually *REDUCES* your chance of getting an interview relative to having *NO PROFILE!*
And even though the difference is likely statistically insignificant, it does point to a larger lesson:
👉 If you're applying for jobs and considering doing something poorly (e.g., a cover letter, a networking call), you may actually be BETTER OFF not doing it AT ALL! 🤯
For instance, imagine using ChatGPT to generate a cover letter that reeks of laziness.
In almost all cases as a recruiter or hiring manager, I'd ding that candidate more than a candidate who had a great CV but NO cover letter!
