Want to start a fight amongst career coaches? :)
Just ask them whether 1-page OR 2-page resumes are better... 💥
Which is why I ❤️ this data from ResumeGo - where they actually tested the question with real recruiters.
And yet, the 🔥 keeps burning with questions like: "What the heck would explain that???"
So, in the interest of bringing peace to the warring tribes, let me offer a theory:
My take as both a former recruiter and hiring manager is that it's all about WHITE SPACE. ▢
I saw so many 1-page resumes come across my desk that looked more like EYE CHARTS. And so no matter how qualified they were, I just couldn't bear to really dig in.
Versus give me a nice, 2-page resume with reasonable margins, fonts, etc. - and now it feels like a beautiful RED CARPET vs. the 8.5x11 equivalent of a DUMPSTER FIRE 🔥
In other words, in our haste to stick to unsubstantiated rules and to win over "algorithms," we've forgotten the most important rule of all: KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE.
And until the Singularity or Skynet, our audience has human eyes... 👀
